The Shared Hierarchical Academic Research Computing Network (SHARCNET) is a consortium of 18 Ontario colleges and universities in a "cluster of clusters" of high performance computers linked by advanced fibre optics. SHARCNET provides some of the most powerful HPC infrastructure in Canada in support of academic research. SHARCNET's mission is "To promote and facilitate the use of high performance computational techniques among researchers in all fields and to train a new generation of computationally-skilled individuals." 
 
The Technical Specialist will be responsible for supporting researchers and their groups in dealing with the efficient processing of large, heterogeneous data sets using a variety of data mining, machine learning and other analytics software. The incumbent will be able to help researchers identify the kinds of analyses that may be relevant to the data that they have; help researchers collect and/or transform data into forms for efficient processing in large, parallel computational environments. The Technical Specialist is expected to be familiar with a variety of data analytics tools, data mining and machine learning methods and storage strategies for efficient processing of large data sets in parallel environments. 
 
Qualifications 
Education:
-   MSc in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Software Engineering or related discipline
-   PhD degree in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics or Software Engineering would be preferred
 
Experience:
-   One year of strong programming experience in Java, C, C++
-   One year experience administering Unix/Linux servers
-   Strong foundation in analytics, data structures, algorithms and software design
-   Experience in the analysis/mining/machine learning of large data sets
-   Two years' experience in the use of data management/analytics tools (SAS, SPSS, R,Hive Sqoop, etc.) and data architectures (OpenStack, Hadoop, Pig, Hive, etc.)
-   Experience with data management in parallel computing environments is preferred
-   Experience in an academic research environment and using MapReduce/Hadoop and related tools would be an asset
 
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
-   Demonstrated ability in the development of data analytics/mining or machine learning applications
-   Strong analytical, written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to complete detailed analytics and reports
-   Ability to objectively analyze use of analytical or computational methods in different problem domains
-   Demonstrated ability to research/investigate issues and resolve problems
-   Demonstrated ability to facilitate effective and collegial relationships
-   Ability to take initiative and work collaboratively in a team-based environment
-   Ability to work autonomously and manage competing priorities and projects
