Job Description

Responsibilities

  • This individual is responsible for managing a particular Board’s Drivers and Owner Operators to ensure a positive contribution to the achievement of Operational goals. (Revenue per Mile, Fleet Utilization and loaded/unloaded goals, etc.)
  • The promotion of positive driver relations and superior customer service is a key factor in the success of this function.
  • Maintaining positive cross-functional relationships is an ongoing responsibility.
  • Cover for other terminals as required.

Role Tasks

  • Dispatches equipment and drivers for margin optimization.
  • Ensures entry of drivers’ hours and ensures compliance with Company and legislative “Hours of Service Regulations”.
  • Maintains information on the availability and location of drivers to ensure they are being dispatched for optimal revenue per unit.
  • Inputs accurate and timely data entry in the dispatch and driver call-in screens. (i.e. actual delivery time, hours, equipment repositioning, status changes, etc.)
  • Handles drivers’ concerns and complaints to maintain positive relationships and harmony within the driver work force.
  • Deals with customers and any claims (as directed by the Safety Dept.) and complaints to ensure a high level of service satisfaction.
  • Responsible to complete Driver and Owner Operator Performance Reviews for their Board and makes discipline recommendations on driver problems.
  • Identifies freight opportunities
  • Works together with colleagues to ensure a high level of teamwork and co-operation.
  • Responsible to complete credit procedures as per Company Policy.
  • Responsible to negotiate with Customers and enter into the accessorial screen any applicable charges. (i.e. waiting time, trailer demurrage, reroute charges, etc.)
  • Ensures Drivers and Owner Operators are given complete load information (i.e. trip #, freight bill #, appointment times, special instructions, load requirements, etc.)
  • Reports all Service Failures to terminal manager
  • Must be available by cellular phone after normal business hours.
  • Saturday morning and weekends operations coverage by rotation
  • Other duties as assigned

Relationships with Peers

  • As a member of a high functioning team, works co-cooperatively with fellow fleet managers to ensure ongoing department success.

Decision-making Scope

  • Makes decision relating to the dispatch of equipment and drivers, as well as freight rates, within established parameters.
  • Decides on the need for discipline and refers those issues to the terminal manager
  • Adheres to department and company policies and procedures.
  • Comply with company credit Policy.

Cross-functional Relationships and Authorities

  • Maintains positive relationships with all departments and provides recruiting and retention support across the organization.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 2 years Operations Management and Trucking Industry experience.
  • Experience working with Truckmate will be considered an asset
  • Good knowledge of North American geography combined with strong math skills.
  • Creative capabilities combined with good problem-solving, listening and communication skills.
  • Computer literate.
  • Ability to prioritize in a fast paced environment.
