Campus Police/Fire Safety seeks to provide training and education to the Western community; to identify, prevent and respond to fire and safety issues. We ensure compliance with legislative requirements, local bylaws and university policies and responsiveness to the Western community as it aligns with Fire and Safety goals. We strive to work collaboratively with internal and external campus partners and proactively identify and implement measures to improve fire safety.

The Technical Specialist seeks to promote and create a safe workplace, living space and recreational space and to mitigate fire hazards through technical testing and inspections. This includes the application of the Ontario Fire Code (OFC), the Ontario Building Code (OBC), and applicable standards. The incumbent records and maintains all records of maintenance, testing and repairs to fire safety equipment, fire alarm systems and components, sprinkler systems and components, standpipe systems and components and special extinguishing systems and components (includes commercial kitchen suppression system). The Technical Specialist also performs monthly and annual fire alarm inspections and assists in the coordination and carrying out of contractor assisted inspections, testing and maintenance as required.
 
Qualifications
Education:
-   2 year Community College Diploma
 
Experience:
-   3 years' experience testing/inspecting and repairing fire alarm systems
-   Experience working with Ontario Fire Code (OFC), Ontario Building Code (OBC), Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC) Standards and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standards
-   Licensed Journeyman Electrician is preferred
-   Valid Class G Driver's License
 
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
-   Proven knowledge of testing, repairing and maintaining per CAN/ULC S524, S536, & S537 standards
-   Proven knowledge of using various electrical meters and test equipment  
-   Proven knowledge of fire hazards and related fire prevention and abatement methods, fire prevention inspection methods and techniques
-   Proven ability to conduct fire safety inspections
-   Demonstrated understanding of safe work practices and procedures
-   Demonstrated ability to interpret, apply and explain rules, regulation policies and procedures
-   Ability to provide fire safety education and training to small and large groups
-   Proven customer service orientation with the ability to respond professionally to inquiries, complaints and requests for services in a fair, tactful and firm manner
-   Demonstrated ability to obtain cooperation and compliances to policies, regulations and legislation
-   Ability to convey new ideas, information and communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing
-   Demonstrated ability to read and understand blueprints and building floor plans
-   Proven ability to work well independently as well as in a team environment
-   Establish and maintain effective, courteous and tactful working relationships with department personnel, the public and city officials
-   Effectively give and receive verbal and written instructions to staff, students and the public
-   Demonstrated ability to effectively multi-task and prioritize with an eye to consistently producing high-quality work and meeting deadlines
-   Prepare and coordinate daily, monthly and annual work schedules
-   Intermediate level of knowledge using tablets and Microsoft Office and Excel
